Study suggests that one can burn MORE CALORIES by having a workout partner

New research from the Kansas State University suggests that people who exercised with a partner, who they considered better than them, were able to increase their workout time and intensity by 200%.  200%?!  So why do we increase our time and intensity when we are working out with someone who is perceived as better?  They believe it is because we feel inadequate and therefore strive to be equal.

The researchers found that when you were exercising with someone who was a little better than you, you would work harder than if you were alone.  Therefore, if you want to burn some extra calories, then you are best to work with a partner to enhance your motivation and increase potential weight loss.

The study explains that the optimal partner would be someone who is approximately 40% better than you.  Now, finding someone of this exact stature may be quite tough, however any friend or family member who is willing to commit their time to exercise with you will only give you more support.  By making a commit with someone else to go to the gym together 4 times a week, you will be more likely to go since if you skip a workout, you will feel as if you are letting the partner down.

How to find a Workout Partner?

The road to losing weight is a bumpy one.  Not everyone stays on a direct course and sometimes slip happen along the way.  So the Workout Partner will help you.  But, in addition to the research presented prior – what else or other things should I look for in the perfect match?

Similar Goals: If you each have similar goals in mind, it will be far easier to converse about your progress.  In addition, you can each set yourself short term goals that incorporate each other.  An example of this would be both of you losing 10 lbs in 7 weeks.  You can support each other through this process.

Similar Daily Routines: If you both work similar hours, it will make it a lot easier to schedule gym times than if you worked opposing shifts.  By maintaining a set schedule, you will be more inclined to continue.

You Get Along With Them: No one said you had to exercise with your enemy.  If you do not share any common interests or are less inclined to socialize with this person – you will fall of the band wagon quick.  Try to pick someone who is supportive and that you enjoy spending time with.
