What Workout Plan is Right for Me?

The first step of any resistance training program is making the commitment to be stronger, getting fit, or getting lean.  The second step is probably one of the hardest and can make or break ones results.  The second step is trying to decipher what program will get you from where you are to where you want to be.

With the increasing availability of knowledge on the internet, it can make trying to find a workout program difficult.  Although it may be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, I have devised a list of key areas you should answer first so that you can find the perfect program suited to your needs.  These five factors will influence your choice and help you rule out the programs that may not let your reach your potential.

Time

If you cannot commit to going to the gym 6-7 days a week, why choose a program that calls for this?  That will only lead you to danger you will lose interest fast.  You will lose motivation quickly and stop going altogether.  Try and decide how many days you can commit to going to the gym first and then go from there.  Many 3-4 days workout schedules do the trick!

Skill Level

Do not lie to yourself.  If you are a beginner, then try and find a program suited to that level of experience.  Many advanced lifting programs have exercises that if not performed properly may cause serious harm.  Although the program may look fancy and impress your friends, you will get nowhere if you do not perform the proper technique.  Try and stick with programs that have exercises you are familiar with or feel capable of performing with no errors.

Goal

What is it you want to do?  If you want to lose weight, would performing a bulking resistance training program benefit you?  If you have specific goals in mind, you will be able to find a program suited to those needs.  Refer to a previous article on goal setting to help make attainable goals.

Equipment

Research what your local gym has in terms of equipment so that your program can be accommodated to their facility.  If you do not have access to the required equipment to perform a certain exercise, then you will gain nothing except a big headache trying to come up with an alternative.  By knowing what equipment you have in advance, you will be able to pick a program that can be conducted.  There are hundreds of programs online that incorporate a combination of or only machines, free weights, or body weight.

Personal Preference

Try and pick a workout program that incorporates exercises you enjoy.  By picking a combination of exercises you find appealing, it will get the most out of your sessions.  By pushing through exercises you do not enjoy or hate, you will be doing nothing but hurting yourself and wasting your time.  The more you enjoy it, the more you will come back for more!
