The Eat Stop Eat diet is a well-known and popular diet and nutrition method based on intermittent fasting.  The basic premise is that fasting once or twice a week for 24 hours helps increase your metabolism and helps you lose fat.  The author Brad Pilon claims that there are many benefits to intermittent fasting.

Who Created Eat Stop Eat?

The author is Brad Pilon, who is a fitness expert and one of the pioneering researchers into intermittent fasting.  He discovered the concept and tested it out in Graduate school at the University of Guelph.  He describes his mission as “My goal is to help you lose fat and gain muscle as simply as possible.” (source)  As he is a graduate researcher he has an extremely in-depth understanding of fitness and the fitness industry.  He believes there are many fitness ideas out there that are half-truths or not true in any way at all.  The program is entirely based on his research at graduate school.

What are the Principles of Eat Stop Eat?

Intermittent Fasting

This is the core linchpin of this diet program.  Essentially, you don’t eat 1-2 days of the week.  You undergo a 24 hour fast during this period.  Brad claims that a 24 hour fast can help lose fat by increasing your metabolism.  Additionally fasting 2 times a week lowers your total caloric input by around 25 percent.  He also disproves the myth that fasting results in muscle loss with scientific evidence.  Additionally he also disproves the myth that 24 hour fasting results in a lower metabolism.  Also, the 24 hour fasting method has been shown to improve energy.  The great thing about the 24 hour fasting method is you’ll be saving time on eating and cooking that day, which essentially improves your productivity massively.  I’m guessing you spend at least 2 hours a day on food, if you fast 2 times a week you’re saving 4 hours a week.  Let’s not forget the fact that you’re also saving money on groceries.  The fact that this method saves money, time, gives you more energy, and helps you lose weight at the same time is just incredible.

The 24 hour fast may sound incredibly hard but there is evidence that our ancestors often went for 24 hours without food.  Brad Pilon says that it takes some time to get used to.  I suggest starting with one 24 hour fast every week.  You may experience a headache the first time.  Allow yourself to have some calories and energy in the form of a juice drink or such.  Make sure you drink enough water.  After a few weeks you’ll be able to do the 24 hour fast without much trouble and then you can scale it up to 2 times a week.

Normal Meal Sizes

Brad Pilon claims that eating a normal meal size is the best way to go when following this meal plan.  This means that you don’t eat as much as you want after the fast.  Eat something reasonable but don’t go overboard stuffing yourself with junk food as a prize for lasting through the 24 hour fasting period.  Additionally Eat Stop Eat advocates that you eat healthy food whenever you are not fasting.  Eating high amounts of protein and lower amounts of carbohydrates is highly suggested.  Additionally Eat Stop Eat recommends that you avoid junk food and processed food.

Eat Stop Eat Scam Rumours

There are some rumours and allegations that this program is a scam.  Detractors claim that 24 hour fasting is horrible for a person’s health.  They claim it leads to muscle loss, constant headaches, and is horrible for the body.  Brad counters by claiming that our ancestors often went 24 hours without food and were still able to perform very well.  Additionally there are many health studies out there on the benefits of fasting.  For example, this study discovered fasting leads to improved cardiovascular health.  Another study found that rats experienced improved longevity from fasting.  In the light of scientific research that supports the health benefits of fasting it’s very hard to agree with detractors.  I can say without confidence that Eat Stop Eat is not a scam and is in fact a very solid product.

My Eat Stop Eat Review (Including actual Eat Stop Eat results)

The principles in Eat Stop Eat are extremely solid and backed up by science.  It’s another question whether it holds up in practice.  For most of us fasting for 24 hours is a daunting ordeal.  For this review I decided to actually fast 2 times a week for 3 weeks.  The first time I did the fast was very hard for me. I’m used to eating every couple of hours and not eating made me feel horrible.  However, the second time it was a slight bit better and it improved with every session.  By the third week I actually felt improved energy while fasting and I had better control over myself.  I was enjoying the fasting and I was getting leaner and fitter.  While the fasting sounds extremely daunting I highly suggest you at least give it a try.

The product itself is an 80 page eBook.  It’s been written with a craftsman like amount of detail.  He goes over nutrition in depth, and also over the science of fasting.  If you haven’t been convinced of the benefits of fasting by this review, you will be when you read his eBook.  His graduate school education comes through the writing because unlike other fitness writers he focuses on actual science, actual results, and actual studies.

Concluding Thoughts on Eat Stop Eat

The basic package starts at $36.99 and there are packages with extras such as audios and workout routines.  However, I like the basic package as it explains everything you need to know and its reasonably priced product.  I’d highly recommend Eat Stop Eat because it’s getting a 4/5 rating from us at eHealthCritic.  If you like to lose weight and stay fit in a scientifically sound manner then you have no excuse to not buy Eat Stop Eat.
